About

About Know Your Matcha

Know Your Matcha exists because buying matcha in India is unnecessarily confusing. Tins say “ceremonial grade” and “AAA” without those words meaning anything specific, prices swing from ₹400 to ₹4,000 for powder that looks identical online, and most “best matcha” lists are affiliate roundups written by people who never opened the tin.

What this site is

An independent guide to matcha, region by region. Coverage is deepest in India, where we buy and test at retail, and is expanding city by city. We cover four questions:

Who writes it

Know Your Matcha is written and run by its founder and sole editor, based in Bangalore. I am a data professional by trade, which shapes how this site works: I would rather publish a small number of things I have actually measured than a large number of things I have paraphrased from elsewhere.

My interest in matcha started as a drinker, not an expert. That is deliberately reflected in the writing, I explain what I checked, how I checked it, and where I am uncertain, rather than adopting the tone of a tea master.

What makes this different from a listicle

Every product recommendation is meant to trace back to a documented test with a date attached. Where we have not tested something, we say so, and it is not given a score. See our testing methodology for the exact protocol.

We also publish what we do not know. Origin, cultivar and harvest information is frequently unavailable for matcha sold in India, where a brand does not disclose it, we record that as unverified rather than filling the gap with a guess.

Current state of coverage

This site is early. Being straight about that matters more than looking bigger than we are:

AreaWhere we stand today
Brands covered14 brands available in India documented on our India ranking.
First-hand testedA small number so far. The rest are marked Not yet tested, and our long-term aim is that every ranked product is a tested product.
Cafés listedAround 100. Thirty-five across Bangalore, Mumbai and Delhi; fifty across New York, Boston, Chicago, San Francisco and Los Angeles; plus 16 notable cafés in 12 other countries.
Cafés visited in personA subset. Visit-verified entries will carry a visit date; the rest are compiled from menus and public information.

How we are funded

No brand, café or retailer can pay to be included, to rank higher, or to change a verdict. Where a commercial relationship exists, an affiliate link, or a product sent to us free of charge. It is labelled on the entry itself, not buried in a policy page. See our editorial policy.

Make us a preferred source

If this site is useful to you, you can tell Google to show it to you more often. It takes one click, costs nothing, and it is the only lever a small independent site has that does not depend on being bigger.
