City guide

Matcha in Zurich

Zurich has something most European cities do not: a matcha bar that refuses to sell coffee. That single fact tells you more about the city's scene than a list would, because a venue with no fallback product has to be good at the one it has.

The no-coffee test

Ju Matcha Bar is entirely dedicated to matcha: no coffee, no black tea, no extended food menu, with preparation using a chasen and several styles available including traditional usucha. That is the strongest structural signal a matcha venue can give. A cafe that sells coffee can carry a mediocre matcha indefinitely, because most customers are ordering something else. A matcha-only bar cannot.

Zurich's oddity: the railway station

Two of the venues in the are inside Zurich Hauptbahnhof, one in the Sihlpassage and one in ShopVille. This is genuinely useful rather than a curiosity, because it means a decent matcha is available on a layover, which is not true of most European cities. Do not expect a ceremony at either.

Price, honestly

Zurich is among the most expensive cities in the world for anything served in a cup, and we have no sourced matcha price band to publish. Assume it costs more than the same drink anywhere else in this guide. If you are in Switzerland for any length of time, buying a tin and a frother pays back very quickly, see the whisk guide and the first tin guide.

What to order

At a dedicated bar, order usucha and nothing else on the first visit. Everywhere else, order the latte unsweetened. Zurich also has a strong patisserie crossover, so the dessert side is worth a separate trip.

Zurich: questions

Where is the best matcha in Zurich?

Swiss coverage consistently points at Ju Matcha Bar, entirely dedicated to matcha with no coffee on the menu and chasen preparation. The Matcha Club is the other dedicated venue named.

Can you get matcha at Zurich main station?

Yes, unusually. The names worth knowing are two venues inside Zurich Hauptbahnhof, one in the Sihlpassage and one in ShopVille. That makes a decent matcha available on a layover, which is not true of most European cities.

Why does a matcha-only cafe matter?

Because it cannot hide. A cafe that also sells coffee can carry a mediocre matcha indefinitely, since most customers order something else. A venue with matcha as its only product has to get it right, which is why a no-coffee policy is a genuine structural signal rather than a marketing pose.

Is matcha expensive in Zurich?

Almost certainly, since Zurich is among the world's most expensive cities for anything served in a cup, though we have no sourced price band for matcha specifically and will not invent one. If you are staying a while, a tin and a frother pay back quickly.
